History | The Band was formed in 1964 under the leadership of P/M Donald McLeish, D/Sgt Duncan Graham and D/M Keith Reylin. Through the early years the band progressed from Grade Two up to Grade One winning their first Grade one contest in Tamworth in 1967 and ultimately winning the Australian Grade One Pipe Band Championships at Hobart, Tasmania in 1972. Over the years the band has been very successful on the competition field culminating in winning the Australian Grade 1 Championships in 1972. After the initial success in 1972, more results were forthcoming. We have been runner up at the Australian National Championships in 1976, 1978, 1982 and 1988. Our No.2 Band has also had success winning the Australian Championships in 1974 and 1978. In 2002 the Band was crowned NSW Grade 1 State Champions and under P/M Scott Nicolson the band attended Square Day in New Zealand in 2003 competing in Grade 2. In 2005, the band received a name change for competition purposes, becoming known as The Band Club - Sydney. 2005 saw the band attend the World Pipe Band Championships competing in Grade 2 and achieving 11th place. Locally, in 2006 the band won the Grade 2 Victorian Championships, and Grade 2 Australian Championships. In 2007 & 2008, the band placed 3rd in Grade 2 at the World Pipe Band Championships, and won the lead-up competitions at North Berwick & Bridge of Allan. The band was promoted to Grade 1, in early 2008, and competed at the New Zealand National Championships, before attempting to qualify for the Grade 1 final at the World Pipe Band Championships. Prior to the World Championships, at North Berwick and Perth, the band claimed both the Medley and MSR prizes. The following week at the World Championships, The Band Club - Sydney Australia, became the first band to ever qualify for the Grade 1 final in its first competition at the highest level. On returning to Australia the band continued its success by winning the 2008 Australian and South Pacific Championships in Sydney. |
